Color a map of US states in a minute

The US States Map Maker turns a blank map of the 50 states into a color-coded chart. Choose a color group, then click states on the map or pick them from the searchable list — type a name or a postal code like TX or NY. Click a state again to remove it, or with another group active to move it. Each group has a legend label you can rename (“Visited”, “Offices”, “Voted yes”, “Over $60k”) and a color you can change, with up to eight groups per map. Alaska and Hawaii sit in insets so the whole country fits on one slide.

Use it for a sales-territory or coverage map, the states you've lived in or visited, election and ballot results, where a law or policy applies, shipping zones, or a classroom worksheet on regions of the United States. The map is deliberately plain — flat gray states, thin white borders and solid colors — so it stays readable in reports, presentations and social posts. Switch the country to color Canadian provinces, Mexican states, Indian states, Australian states and territories, French regions or departments, and the first-level divisions of more than 200 countries.

Add a title, keep the legend on, and download a PNG with both drawn in. Everything lives in the page link, so you can bookmark the map, send it to a colleague, or come back to keep editing. When a still image isn't enough, Mapimator Studio turns maps into short animated videos with highlighted regions, flying cameras, routes and pins.

Frequently asked questions

Is the US map maker free?

Yes. Coloring states, adding a title and legend, sharing a link and downloading the PNG are all free, with no account required.

Are Alaska and Hawaii included?

Yes. Like most printed US maps, Alaska and Hawaii are drawn as insets below the West Coast, so all 50 states and Washington, D.C. fit in one view. Alaska is shrunk to about a third of its true size to fit; Hawaii is shown slightly enlarged.

Can I color provinces or regions of other countries?

Yes. Pick a country from the list to switch to its first-level divisions — Canadian provinces, Mexican and Brazilian states, Indian states, Chinese provinces, Japanese prefectures, German states and over 200 more. France, Italy, Spain and the UK let you choose between regions and the smaller departments, provinces or council areas.

How many colors can I use?

Up to eight color groups, each with its own legend label and a color you can change. A state belongs to one group at a time: clicking it while another group is active moves it there, and clicking it again removes it.

Can I share or edit my map later?

Yes. The country, colors, labels and title are stored in the page link as you work, so Copy link gives you a URL that reopens exactly the same map. Nothing is uploaded or saved on a server.

Can I label the states on the map?

Turn on state labels to show two-letter postal abbreviations (TX, CA, NY) on a US map, or names on other countries. Where labels would collide in small states, the smaller ones are hidden; zoom in before downloading to fit more.
