How do I map a flight path between two cities?

Why do flight paths look curved on a map?

Aircraft fly great-circle routes — the shortest path over the Earth's curved surface. On a flat map projection that shortest path appears as a curve, which is why flights between, say, New York and Tokyo arc far north over Alaska rather than following a straight map line.

How is the flight time estimated?

The estimate assumes a typical airliner cruise speed of about 840 km/h (Mach 0.78) plus roughly 40 minutes per leg for taxi, climb, and descent. Real schedules vary with winds, routing, and aircraft type, but it's a solid planning figure.

Can I map a route with multiple stops?
