Everything a history map needs

The effects you see on history and geopolitics channels, as settings instead of hours in After Effects.

Conquest animation

Pick the regions an empire takes, in order. Each one is captured by a front line sweeping in from the land already held, and joins one territory with no borders inside it.

Merge and cut borders

Join countries into one empire or alliance with the inner borders dissolved, or cut one region out of another — a country minus its occupied land.

Hatched and glowing territory

Diagonal, crosshatch or dotted fills over any colour, a soft glow around the border, and bold labels with a drop shadow — the look of a classic history explainer.

Spotlight

Dim the rest of the world so the territory you're talking about stands out, fading in and out with your story.

Battle arrows

Curved, tapered war arrows with triangle, barbed or open heads that grow along their path as they draw — for invasions, campaigns and retreats.

Camera moves and 4K export

Orbit a capital, sweep across a front or rise to a top-down view between slides. Export MP4 in up to 4K, in 16:9 or vertical.

How a conquest plays

A conquest is a region that grows piece by piece over your timeline. You choose the order and the seconds per capture; Mapimator draws the front line and keeps the territory as one shape.

  1. 1The starting territory appears.

  2. 2A front line sweeps across the next region.

  3. 3Captured land joins the territory — no border in between.

  4. 4The empire at its height, ready for your narration.

How to make a history map animation

  1. 1

    Frame the map

Search for the part of the world your story covers and pick a style — satellite, dark or terrain. Save the view as your first slide.

  2. 2

    Add the territories

Add each country, group or continent as a region. Merge them into empires, or cut out what a side doesn't hold. Style the fill, hatch and border.

  3. 3

    Animate what changes

Turn a region into a conquest, draw the invasion arrows, and add slides for the camera to move between as the story moves.

  4. 4

    Export the video

Preview it, then export MP4 in 16:9 for YouTube or vertical for Shorts and TikTok, ready to drop under your narration.

Ideas you can build today

Territories are built from today's country outlines, merged and cut to the shape you need.

The spread of an empire

Start from a heartland and capture neighbouring regions one by one — Rome across the Mediterranean, the Mongols across Asia.

A war's opening months

Show an invasion front advancing across a country, with arrows for each thrust and the rest of the map dimmed.

Alliances and blocs

Merge member states into one shape — the EU, NATO, the Warsaw Pact — and show who joined when.

Occupation and partition

Cut occupied or ceded territory out of a country and hatch it in the occupier's colour.

Trade routes and campaigns

Trace a general's campaign or a trade route with arrows and a camera that follows it.

Before-and-after borders

Use two slides to compare a region before and after a treaty, with the changed territory highlighted.

Questions about history map animation

Can I show an empire growing over time?

Yes. Add the regions it takes, open the starting region's Conquest settings and tick the others in the order they fall. Each capture plays with a front line sweeping across it, and you set how many seconds each capture takes.

Do you have historical borders, like Europe in 1914?

Not yet as a built-in picker. Today you build historical territories from modern country and group outlines — merge them into one shape, cut out the parts a side didn't hold — or upload your own GeoJSON border file on the Pro plan.

Can I merge several countries into one empire or alliance?

Yes. Tick the regions to merge and they become one shape with the borders between them dissolved. Country groups and continents also have a one-click option to dissolve their inner borders.

How do I show occupied or disputed territory?

Add the occupied area as its own region and cut it out of the country, then give it a hatched fill in the occupier's colour. Both stay separate, so you can animate them independently.

Can I draw arrows for invasions and troop movements?

Yes. Arrows can bend, taper into a filled war-map style arrow, and use triangle, barbed, open, diamond, dot or bar heads. The head follows the tip as the arrow draws across the map.

What can I export, and is it free?

You can start for free and export MP4 at 480p with a watermark. Pro removes the watermark and exports up to 4K at 60 fps, in 16:9, vertical or square.
