Measure the area of any land on a map

This map area calculator measures land straight from satellite imagery. Find the property, field, park or lake, click around its edge, and you get the area in acres, hectares, square meters, square kilometers, square miles and square feet, along with the perimeter and a comparison you can picture, like the number of football pitches it would hold. It's the quick way to check the acreage of a listing, plan fencing or seed for a paddock, size a solar array or settle how big that lake really is.

Areas are calculated geodesically, on the curved surface of the Earth, rather than by counting pixels on a flat map. That matters because web maps stretch everything away from the equator: on a Mercator map a field in Norway looks about four times bigger than an identical one in Kenya. The figure here is the same wherever you draw, for a back garden or a whole county.

Draw as many shapes as you need: each one is listed with its own name and area, and the total is added up for you. Drag corners to fine-tune the outline, switch to the street map to follow property lines, then download a PNG with the areas labeled or export the shapes as GeoJSON for QGIS and other GIS software.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure an area on a map?

Search for the place, zoom in on the satellite view, then click each corner of the area you want to measure. Click the first corner again, double-click, or press Enter to close the shape. The area and perimeter appear instantly, and you can drag any corner afterwards to refine the outline.

How accurate is the area calculation?

The math is geodesic: each shape's area is computed on the curved surface of the Earth, not on the flat map, so it stays correct at any latitude and for shapes of any size. In practice accuracy depends on how carefully you trace the boundary; zoom in close and add more corners along curved edges. For legal boundaries, rely on a licensed survey.

How many acres is a hectare?

One hectare is 10,000 square meters, or about 2.471 acres. One acre is 43,560 square feet, or about 4,047 square meters (0.405 hectares). A soccer pitch is roughly 0.7 hectares, or 1.8 acres. Pick any unit from the menu and the calculator shows the area in all the others too.

Can I measure several areas at once?

Yes. Finish one shape, then click outside it (or press New shape) to start the next. Each shape gets its own color, name and area, and the panel adds them up into a total, which is handy for fields split by a road or a lot with several buildings.

Can I export the shapes?

Download a PNG of the map with the area written on each shape, or copy and download the outlines as GeoJSON with the area in square meters, hectares and acres plus the perimeter in each feature's properties. GeoJSON opens in QGIS, geojson.io, Google Earth (after conversion) and most GIS tools.

Is the area calculator free?

Yes. It's free with no account required, and it runs entirely in your browser. To turn the map into an animated video, open Mapimator Studio.
