Set Camera Speed and Easing Between Slides

Every camera move in a Mapimator animation belongs to the slide it leaves. The Duration field sets how many seconds the camera takes to reach the next slide, and the easing pill under it sets how it speeds up and slows down on the way. This guide covers both, then how to reframe a slide, preview the result, and use the Studio shortcuts.

What you'll learn

  • Find and change the Duration field between two slides
  • Choose Smooth, Linear, Late brake, or Elastic for a move
  • Reframe a slide with Update Slide or Retake Slide
  • Preview a move and use the Studio shortcuts

Step-by-step guide

  1. 1

Find the Duration field between two slides

Between each pair of cards in the storyboard there is a small box labeled DURATION, with a number and the word sec. That number is how many seconds the camera takes to travel from the card on its left to the card on its right. The last card has no Duration field because nothing follows it. A slide you add with the plus button starts at 5 seconds for the move to whichever slide you add after it.

  2. 2

Set how long the move takes

Click the number, select it, and type a whole number of seconds. To fine tune, use the up and down arrows on the field, which change it by 0.1 second. The field accepts values from 0.1 to 20 seconds. Here the first move is set to 2 seconds (ring 1) and the second to 6 (ring 2). The running time at the right end of the bar (ring 3) updates straight away: 2 plus 6 seconds, plus the 2 second hold on the final view, gives 10.0s.

  3. 3

    Open a transition's easing

Under each Duration box is a small pill that names the easing, Smooth until you change it (ring 1). Click it to open Transition to the next slide (ring 2) for the move that leaves the card on its left. In the screenshot it is the pill under the Paris card, so the choices shape the move from Paris to Rome. The popover repeats the duration, with minus and plus buttons that change it by 0.5 second, then lists four easings with a sketch of each curve, and ends with an Apply to all transitions checkbox that changes every slide at once. The last card has no move leaving it, so it has no pill.

  4. 4

    Pick an easing

Smooth starts slowly, travels fastest in the middle, and settles slowly. Linear keeps one constant pace from start to finish. Late brake starts fast and slows into the next slide. Elastic overshoots and springs back at both ends, so the camera briefly swings past the start and past the target. The wave icon at the top of a card opens a separate menu: Swoop pulls the camera back partway through the move and lets it settle in on arrival, and Camera Move adds a shape such as an orbit or a sweep on top; see the guide on camera moves for those. Once a card uses a non-default easing or a camera move, its icon turns blue, as on the first two cards here.

  5. 5

    Reframe a slide

Click a card so the map jumps to that slide, then pan, zoom, or tilt. To save the new framing to the slide, open the three-dot menu on its card (ring 1) and choose Retake Slide (use current camera) (ring 2). The same menu holds Add Camera Shot options (Orbit here, Push in, Pull out, Tilt reveal) and Delete Slide. There is a quicker way too: as soon as the map differs from the saved view, an Update Slide bar appears at the bottom of the map with the slide name under it (ring 3). Click Update Slide to save the framing. The arrow button beside it puts the map back to the saved view, and the X hides the bar.

  6. 6

    Preview the move

Select the first card, then click Play Preview or press Space. The map flies through the slides in order. Press Space or click Pause to freeze on a frame; the button then reads Resume (ring 1), next to Cancel, which stops the preview. A green playhead with a time label (ring 2) shows where you are on the storyboard, and the bar shows the elapsed and total time (ring 3). While a preview is running the other editing controls are grayed out. The screenshot shows a preview paused at 4.6 seconds of 10.0, partway through the move from Paris to Rome.

  7. 7

    Learn the shortcuts

Click Shortcuts in the bottom bar to open Shortcuts and Controls. Map Interaction: Pan is Left Click + Drag, Rotate and Pitch is Ctrl + Drag (or Right Click + Drag), and Zoom is the Scroll wheel. Keyboard Shortcuts: Space plays or pauses. Del or Backspace deletes the selection. Ctrl or Cmd + Z undoes. Ctrl + Y or Cmd + Shift + Z redoes. Ctrl or Cmd + D duplicates the selection. Esc deselects or closes. Delete on a selected element asks whether to hide it from the current slide forward or delete it everywhere. With no layer selected, it deletes the selected slide right away.

Pro tips

  • The running time in the bar is every Speed value added together plus a 2 second hold on the last slide.
  • Easing belongs to the card a move leaves. To change how the camera arrives at Rome, open the pill under the card before Rome.
  • If a preview stutters, open Preview Full next to the frame icons and choose 1/2 or 1/4. It only changes the preview, not the export.
  • The Timeline view shows the same moves on a time ruler if you want to see all the timing at once.
